Why the need for remote monitoring?
Nowadays, IT and Network infrastructures are more distributed than ever before. Companies have their devices and services distributed over local networks, branch offices, customer networks (in case of MSP), data centers and in the cloud.

Unified Monitoring
PRTG is an agentless unified monitoring solution. On the one hand, each device or service which has an IP address, or is reachable over IP and talks a protocol (SNMP, HTTP, WMI, Flow, etc) can be monitored by PRTG probes (see below). On the other hand, there is no need to install agents on monitored devices.
Local Probe
Upon configuration, PRTG creates the first probe automatically, called the Local Probe. It runs on the same machine as the PRTG core server and monitors all devices in your LAN, using the sensors you have configured.
Remote Probes
You can extend monitoring to your distributed networks by installing a remote probe in each network you want to keep an eye on. PRTG remote probes come in two flavors – the classic remote probe for Windows systems and the multi-platform probe for Linux/Unix and other systems – and allow you to monitor different subnetworks that are separated by a firewall from your central PRTG server.

How PRTG defines sensors
In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, e.g. the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, the free space of a disk drive. On average you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
MSP Solution
Each product of the Paessler PRTG family can be used as a fully-featured MSP solution. With PRTG Network Monitor, for example, you simply install the central PRTG server in your local network and then monitor your customers’ sites via remote probes. This allows you to monitor different customers at the same time.
Access Rights
Moreover, PRTG offers a credential-based system. Depending on your customers’ needs, you can define different access rights: either give them full access to their probes, groups, or sensors, so they can manage their monitoring on their own, or you just give them read-only access so that they can see their own monitoring data but not change any settings.
Alerts
PRTG monitors your customer’s infrastructure 24/7. You can be notified via various types of notifications (e.g. SMS, email, Pager, Push notifications) to react quickly. This alert can be sent to your customer, too. Also, escalation levels can be defined.
Reports
You can also create regular reports for you and for your customers, containing statistics of events, outages, uptime etc. PRTG will not only ensure you get alerted in time, it also gives you the opportunity to create easily understandable dashboards which quickly give you an overview of your local and remote sites.
