What is LogicMonitor?
LogicMonitor is a cloud-based network monitoring tool. It lets you monitor network performance, cloud services, servers, and hardware. The SaaS tool is billed monthly (per monitored device) and comes in Pro and Enterprise versions. The full range of features is only available beginning with the Enterprise license, which is an absolute must if you plan on monitoring more than 200 devices.

PRTG licenses are flexible and affordable
LogicMonitor license costs are based on the number of monitored devices. We believe our licenses, which are based on the total number of sensors, allow for much more flexibility. Most of the time, you won't need to read and monitor every single interface on every device. Usually, our customers need between 5 and 10 sensors per device. On the whole, PRTG licenses are therefore much less expensive than comparable licenses by LogicMonitor.
How PRTG defines sensors
In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, e.g. the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, the free space of a disk drive. On average you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
Choose between an on-premise and a cloud-based solution
Looking to host and install your monitoring in your own network? If so, then PRTG Network Monitor is the right choice for you. An on-premise solution can be advantageous even if you don’t want your monitoring environment to interfere with the availability and performance of your Internet connection. LogicMonitor, on the other hand, is only available as a SaaS. With PRTG, you can also opt for a cloud-based solution – PRTG Hosted Monitor comes with the full range of monitoring features, is quick and easy to set up, and provides for flexible monthly billing based on the number of sensors you use for your monitoring.

PRTG comes with more than 250 preconfigured sensors. LogicMonitor’s out-of-the-box monitoring is much more limited. With PRTG, you can add devices or services to your monitoring environment with just a few clicks. PRTG lets you customize your monitoring in many different ways and even create your own sensors (custom sensors).

Detailed long-term statistics – as far back as you need them
PRTG not only shows you if your network is underperforming or a service is down, but it also provides you with detailed, long-term statistics. Among other things, these statistics can help you determine how your bandwidth consumption has evolved over the past couple of years. They are also useful for convincing higher-ups of the need for upgrades to your IT infrastructure. Unlike LogicMonitor, which only saves monitoring data for a limited period of time, PRTG lets you generate statistics as far back as you like (depending on the configuration of the system).
