How PRTG defines sensors
In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, e.g. the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, the free space of a disk drive. On average you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
The FTP server: Your download center
As download centers, FTP servers provide customers and coworkers with data, applications, drivers, and software updates. The functioning of these servers therefore has a direct impact on customer satisfaction. If downloads are consistently slow, then the latter is bound to suffer. Furthermore, service-level agreements must be upheld to avoid contractual penalties in the B2B realm.
FTP servers: Data distribution centers
FTP servers act as in-house data distribution centers. They ensure information, software, and updates are distributed to the individual workstations of your company. This distribution affects work processes, and is especially vital for closing security loopholes quickly. Customers want to be able to easily upload project documentation, employees need to exchange data without interruptions, and perhaps most importantly, system administrators must be informed of changes to servers and keep an eye on crucial server values such as response time.
PRTG comes with FTP sensors
Professional FTP monitoring is required to effectively (and reliably) complete all these tasks. PRTG offers pre-configured sensors for FTP, FTPS, and SFTP servers. PRTG monitoring prevents downtime, speeds up troubleshooting, records changes to the current file count, and immediately notifies you of performance problems, such as when a server’s response time slows down. FTP-based services should be quickly and easily accessible at all times, and the distribution of data and applications must be carried out without interruption. Use PRTG to ensure everything runs smoothly.
With PRTG, everyone will work with peace of mind.
How FTP monitoring with PRTG works
Pre-configured sensors
PRTG comes equipped with three sensors for FTP and SFTP monitoring. These sensors query response times, server messages, and the current file count, and prepare this information for the PRTG dashboard and reports. Other sensors can be customized according to your own specific needs. In the event of a problem, PRTG will automatically send out an alarm notification.
Encryption
A username and password are saved in the sensor settings to allow the sensor to connect to the server. You can customize a variety of other parameters in these settings, including whether you would like PRTG to use SSL or TLS encryption to connect to the FTP server. When counting the number of files, you can specify whether all files should be included in the count, or only those which have been added since the last query. With PRTG, you can even customize query intervals.
PRTG uses the SSH File Transfer Protocol (“FTP over SSH”) to connect to the SFTP servers of Linux systems. This allows you to keep a constant eye on the response times of your SFTP servers.
4 good reasons to choose PRTG as your FTP monitoring tool
Stable and secure
With FTP monitoring, FTP and SFTP servers are more stable during uploads and downloads, data receives greater protection, and unwanted deletions or unusual spikes in the file count are recorded. As a result, your work processes and customer service department will run without a hitch.
Gain an overview
All FTP and SFTP server values are displayed on an easy-to-read dashboard. PRTG also comes with automated reporting. You can customize the dashboard, as well as the alarm and reporting features.
Automated alarms
PRTG will automatically send you an alert as soon as FTP or SFTP server availability becomes an issue. It will also warn you if files are added or deleted, or if any other personalized threshold values are exceeded. PRTG delivers these alarms by SMS, email, or push notification.
Measure performance
Generate FTP server statistics on performance, availability, response times, and file counts. Graphs of the data are created directly in the application, or via a report, which you can also have sent automatically.

Data collected by PRTG
FTP sensor
The FTP ensor monitors files servers that use the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) or FTP over SSL (FTPS). Display the following:
- Server response time
- Server response
FTP Server File Count sensor
The FTP Server File Count sensor connects to a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server and monitors changes to files. It can display the file count of a selected directory.
SFTP Secure File Transfer Protocol sensor
The SFTP Secure File Transfer Protocol sensor monitors the FTP servers of a Linux-/Unix system which use the SSH File Transfer Protocol (FTP over SSH). This sensor attempts to connect to the server, and displays the corresponding response time.
