Alcatel-Lucent offers several lines of high-performance switches and wireless access points. These include OmniAccess Stellar access points and OmniSwitch switches. Alcatel-Lucent is dedicated to making switches and access points that allow for the reliable and error-free transfer of data. And this is true for both its wired and wireless devices.
Alcatel-Lucent also offers its Ucopia and OmniVista tools for the management and monitoring of networks. However, these tools only work with Alcatel-Lucent devices. Most large networks contain switches, WLAN routers, firewalls, and other network components from a variety of different manufacturers. You’re therefore better off with a centralized tool that can monitor your entire IT infrastructure.

PRTG uses SNMP to integrate Alcatel-Lucent switches into your monitoring
PRTG uses the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to measure basic device parameters. If the device is compatible with SNMP, then no complex configurations are required. PRTG comes with several SNMP sensors. Among other things, these sensors can be used to monitor processor load and memory. PRTG also makes it easy to set up sensors that monitor bandwidth consumption or provide information on the status of the hardware of SNMP-compatible components.
In order to create sensors, devices must first be added to the PRTG device tree. The PRTG Auto Discovery feature automatically detects compatible devices in your network and incorporates them into your monitoring environment.

With PRTG, monitoring SNMP-compatible switches is easy. PRTG lets you create device templates if existing switches are already equipped with the desired sensors. These templates can be used for any other switch and therefore help minimize the time you spend on setup. SNMP sensors gather information on a number of important device parameters such as processor load, memory, access times, and reachability.
WLAN monitoring with PRTG
PRTG also monitors wireless devices such as Alcatel-Lucent access points. As with switches, SNMP sensors are useful for monitoring the basic parameters of these devices. PRTG also comes with sensors that provide for more detailed monitoring.
For example, the Packet Sniffer and Packet Sniffer (Custom) sensors read and analyze individual packets. And the NetFlow v5 and NetFlow v9 sensors can be used to obtain detailed monitoring data on the traffic that flows through your access points, provided the access points support the respective feature.
